Maria Guerrero Favoritas en Cedro

The brand

Maria Guerrero is a Cuban brand created in 1930* by José Rodriguez Fernández “Don Pepin” (owner of the Roméo Y Julieta factory). Its name is a tribute to a famous Spanish actress.

Maria Guerrero has become a sister brand to Roméo Y Julieta. At the time of the revolution, the brand had 25 vitolas**.

According to a 1969 catalog there were at least 9 references, 8 in 1971, and only 2 (machine made) in 1976, including the Favoritas in Cedro. The brand still appears in a price list from 1981 but no longer in the Cubataco catalog from 1983.

Favoritas en Cedro

These Maria Guerrero were made shortly before the 60s and discontinued in the early 80s.

The Favoritas en Cedro is a machine-made Petit Corona 40 x 125 (4.9″) individually wrapped in a cedar leaf and presented in a “dress box” of 25 cigars. Packaging similar to that seen on Coronitas en Cedro or Cedros de Luxe at Roméo Y Julieta.

Herman UPMANN was a German banker whose love for cuban cigars led him to settle in Havana in 1844 and found a bank and a Habanos factory in this city.

Over time, the bank closed, but his brand of cigars persists today as an example of the most refined Habanos medium strength flavour. All its vitolas are made “Totalmente a Mano con Tripa Larga “– Totally handmade with Long Filler.

The gold medals adorning the H. UPMANN box were obtained in no less than eleven international fairs throughout the nineteenth century, as a reward for the brand’s quality and inimitable aroma.

Punch Presidentes glass jar

Punch Presidentes Glass Jar

Punch Presidentes glass jar

Glass jars appeared in the 50’s/60’s and disappeared in the 70’s/early 80s. In 2009 HABANOS S.A. made them reappear to contain 25 H.UPMANN Noellas La Casa Del Habano edition. Here an old Punch Presidentes Glass Jar of 25 cigars (extremely rare cigars according to CCW).

These Punch, Marevas (42 x 129),are only available with this packaging of 25’s. Appeared before the 60’s and were discontinued in 80’s.

Punch is one of the oldest Habanos brands. Don Manuel López de Juan Valle and cia founded this brand in the mid-19th century, with the idea of attacking the growing English market, where a humorous publication of the same name was in vogue in those days.

Mr. Punch, the clown that was the symbol of that publication, continues to appear in each of the brand’s boxes with his Habano in hand, surrounded by 19th-century images that shows the making of Habanos, and that are practically the same as those that today can be seen in factories in Cuba.
